National Express West Midlands - Yardley Wood

National Express currently have 10 active depot's across the West Midlands offering services as far as Stafford and Cannock in the North and Leamington in the South, covering majority of areas across the West Midlands. Today's focus we look at Yardley Wood Garage and the services and vehicles it operates and has operated since I started working there in October 2016.

Yardley Wood presently operates 10 full services, 2 works services, a handful of school duties and a peak board on service 72.

Services 2 and 3 make up the Warstock Rota, which do also have a duty on school service 863 (One bus goes onto the 2 and another onto the 18) These services make use of the recently trap fitted Dennis Tridents with Alexander ALX400 bodywork, 4382/3/6-94 and 4565-4577. Service 2 runs from Birmingham to Maypole, terminating short at night at Warstock. Service 3 has seen much change over recent years, when I started at garage the service ran from Birmingham to Shirley Green Business Park, however was cut back in April 2017 to run as far as Yardley Wood's Slade Lane, cutting the service in half, it was rare to carry anyone beyond Shirley, however was popular between Yardley Wood and Shirley.

Service 6 makes up the Hall Green Rota, running between Birmingham and Solihull Station, there are a few early morning duties that cover Monkspath Business Park, usually operated by service 5 from AG, these are run as 6A services and take a faster route into Solihull. Service 6 and 6A follow the Stratford Road for majority of there route to Solihull. These services are home to the recently transferred Alexander Dennis Enviro200MMC's 2230-2250 which moved from Acocks Green, these replaced Scania Omnilinks on the service.

Service 18 makes up the Bartley Green Rota, seen as more the 'Old Boys' Rota it is home to majority of Yardley Wood's Part Time and more experienced drivers, running from Yardley Wood Bus Garage to Bartley Green via Alcester Lanes End, Cotteridge and Northfield. This is usually the home of the Non City going Tridents based at Yardley Wood.

Service 27 forms half of the Pool Farm Rota, running from Maypole, it passes Yardley Wood Garages before working round Yardley Wood and up to Kings Heath, from here it routes through Stirchley and Cadbury, before making its way to Northfield and onwards to West Heath before finally terminating in Hawkesley. The 27 is one of the best services to drive at Yardley Wood and is home of the remaining Scania Omnilinks new to Yardley Wood in 2010 for service 6.

Service 35 forms the other half of the Pool Farm Rota, by far the worst half, same with service 50 it goes into City from Kings Heath, the 35 starts at Hawkesley and works its way through Pool Farm, Kings Heath, Moseley, Balsall Heath and arriving into the City at the Markets. Service 35 uses the former Perry Barr Sutton Lines Alexander Dennis Enviro400's 4718-4727 which are branded for the service and also spare Enviros 4728-32.

Service 49 is one half of the Kings Norton Rota, Service 49 works from Northfield, through Holly Hill, Longbridge, Kings Norton, Maypole and Shirley before making its way to Solihull. Home of Non City going Tridents it also operates as a 49E to Longbridge from Solihull to make a 15 minute service over this section.

Service 50 makes up the Maypole Rota, which also includes the 50A towards Wythall, the main 50 service is from Druids Heath to Birmingham, via Maypole, Kings Heath, Moseley and Highgate. The 50 is home of the newest Double Deckers at Yardley Wood, the Alexander Dennis Enviro400MMCs new in 2015. The 50 is one of the busiest services in Birmingham operating up to every 4 minutes in the peak and Every 5 minutes throughout the day. The 50 service is the only 24 hour service at Yardley Wood running hourly at night from Maypole to Birmingham. The 50A is a peak extension from Maypole to
Wythall, fitted in as a commuter service and also running to form part of a school contract.

Service 76 is the second half of the Kings Norton Rota, running between the QE Hospital, through Selly Oak, Kings Heath and Shirley, before arriving into Solihull. Service 76 like the 49 uses any Decker from Yardley Wood, mostly home of the non city going Tridents.

Service 84 forms the Hawkesley Rota, This rota is made up of just three drivers, mainly part time, it runs from Hawkesley, through Cotteridge, Selly Oak and ends at the QE Hospital using any vehicles available, the 84 is just one vehicle running hourly.

The fleet at Yardley Wood is made up of 5 types, Two forms of single deckers and 3 types of deckers.

The Scania Omnilinks were new in 2010 for use mostly on service 6, however are now mostly used on service 27, with the remained spread across the routes, mostly service 6. The fleet compromises of 15 examples, 1909 - 1917 and 1919 - 1924. All were new to Yardley Wood.

The Trident fleet is made up of a number of batches;
There is just one Y-TOH currently allocated to Yardley Wood, 4130 following
years of having numerous examples, these have been phased out here by newer Tridents, 4130 is a recent vehicle from the Reserve fleet.
The second batch at Yardley Wood are the 43**s, made up of 45 examples, 4333-4335, 4337-4340, 4342-4344, 4360-4383, 4386-4395. Of these just 11 examples are compliant to run into Birmingham City Centre on the high frequency services.
During 2016 Yardley Wood gained 12 45** examples from Wolverhampton which have been refurbished into Crimson standard and are mainly used on services 2 and 3, these are 4565-4577.

In 2017 Yardley Wood gained a new vehicle type, the E200MMC which moved in from Acocks Green to replace majority of the Scania fleet allocated there, these are mostly used on the 6 and are very rare on services 27 and 49 due to poor turning circles. 2230-2250 are allocated at Yardley Wood.

Since 2007 Yardley Wood has operated Alexander Dennis Enviro400s since 2007 when they received a batch for service 50 between Druids Heath and Birmingham, these have since moved on, Yardley Wood gained its second batch from Perry Barr for service 35 between Hawkesley and Birmingham, these being 4718-4732.
Also part of the Enviro400 fleet is the original single door prototype 4698, a rather marmite bus amongst drivers, it has been promised to the Training Fleet, It is used on all non city going services.

In 2015, Yardley Wood gained a new fleet of Crimson Alexander Dennis E400MMCs for use on service 50 between Druids Heath and Birmingham, 6123-6142 are branded for service 50 and 6143-6146 are used on most other services, two vehicles used for Private Hire work are 6147 and 6148 which also see use on services while not needed for this work.

The Red Diamond.


During March 2008, Rotala purchased the West Midlands operation from Go Ahead known as, Diamond Bus Company. This included services in Worcestershire based at the Redditch depot.
At the time of the takeover the fleet carried Diamond Livery which was a basic Red and White livery with the slogan 'Better Buses, Better Service, Better Catch One'.

Following the sale of the service to Rotala, the decision was made to rebrand the services under there own identity.
- Red Diamond - For services in Redditch and Worcestershire
- Black Diamond - For services in the Black Country. 
(There was also later a Blue Diamond brand added for Birmingham service.)

In July 2008 services were rebranded under the Red Diamond brand, with a fleet of 11 brand new Volvo B7RLE, Wright Eclipse Urban's, as well as repainted Dennis Dart SLFs and a second hand B7RLE.

To begin with services 57 and 58 (Matchborough Circulars) received dedicated Volvo B7RLE's 850-853 which carried dedicated branding including the service numbers within the Diamond, These were later joined by 857 and 858 with the PVR of services being 6 vehicles at the time. 

New services 55A and 56A (Oakenshaw Circulars) were registered to compete with First Group services, however these would also compete with the 51 and 68 services by serving Webheath and Batchley and also received brand new 854-6/9-60 as well as 861, the lone second hand B7RLE.

Following the rebranding all services run from Redditch depot were run with Red Diamond branded vehicles. The starting Red Diamond fleet was as follows;

Soon after 4 more Mini Pointer Darts joined the fleet for recently won service 19 between Maypole and Northfield, these were 545-548 which had been repainted and transferred from within the company, mainly from Central Connect.

During September 2009 it was announced that Diamond had won service in Droitwich Spa for which they had agreed to operate with a local company in the area bringing newer low floor vehicles to local town services. For these services MPD's 501-5 were moved over to the newly opened Droitwich Depot. Soon services were expanded with the addition of service 144 between Bromsgrove and Birmingham with 4 branded Urbans moving over from Redditch, 853, 856, 859 and 860 following the withdrawl of services 55A and 56A. 

To replace the Mini Darts at Redditch 6 further Dennis Darts were moved over from Tividale, these being Wright Crusader bodied examples, two received branding, 412 for service 51 and 416 for service 70.

Also following expansion of work from Redditch an additional Red vehicle was required, so at the time, the only ALX200 bodied Dennis Dart at Tividale was moved to Redditch

Further expansion soon came in 2010 with Worcester local and rural services added, many competing with First Group. For this several more vehicles were brought into the Red Diamond fleet. These services included the 30 (Green), 31 (Orange) and 37 (Pink) services using dedicated route colour coded vehicles.

The newly registered services also coincided with Diamond picking up several WCC contracts for services between Worcester and places like Malvern Hills, Pershore and Belmont, amongst others. To operate these services several vehicles were brought in and operated from the Droitwich Spa depot, many of these ex Ludlows vehicles, as well as several vehicles acquired second hand.

Majority of these vehicles were refurbished to a high standard and all entered service at Worcester in Red Diamond livery, albeit some with route branding for certain services. Majority of these vehicles were from Ludlows, however it also included the former Oxford Crusaders that were moved to Diamond when Go Ahead owned them. Sadly these vehicles proved to be somewhat troublesome and Diamond took the move to acquire a number of new vehicles to operate the WCC services from Worcester depot in the shape of MCV Evolution bodied MAN's.

These would prove the be the last vehicles to receive the Red Diamond livery, which was soon discontinued with the Black and Blue versions also seizing to exist, replaced by Diamond Blue.

Now in November 2017, no vehicles in service wear the Red Diamond livery, some remain in store however are unlikely to ever see service again and only 1 vehicle from the Red Diamond days remains on Red Diamond services, this being,

Redditch Local

Seeing as Redditch is my local town, i rarely take the time to use the bus services there other than to get to the Train Station to leave the place. So today i decided it would be a good idea to have a local day, for £2.70 the Redditch Extra tickets offers good value for the extended Redditch boundary (Studley falls just outside Redditch and Worcestershire). To start of the days bashing we headed for the 12:37 143 service to Redditch Bus Station (The bus then continues to Bromsgrove), which turned out to be 30445 (T418 MNH) which is a recent transfer from Tividale depot.

After arriving into Redditch i decided the best option was to find out where the 3 Enviro 300's that are in the Diamond Livery were, as it happens all 3 were in the depot out of service (Typical!). So the next idea was to head out of Redditch to find some sunny spots to take a few photos in.
The first port of call was Studley Road, Lodge Park where the popular 57 and 58 services run at high frequency, while being supported by the once hourly 143 service.

The 57 and 58 services are the flagship services at Redditch with high frequency, modern buses running up to every 5 minutes in either direction, mainly the home of the B7RLE's before the Diamond takeover of First Services it now sees any vehicles in the depot from Solos to Tridents.

After a spell of around 20 minutes at this location it was time to move on, after about 35 minutes most the 57's and 58's have done a circuit and then start the service over again. I decided to head to the Church Lane depot of Diamond to see what was hidden inside, this is now the 'Diamond Engineering Depot' which will carry out any work needed on the Redditch fleet while Plymouth Road will be used to store and wash buses.

Church Lane can hide some hidden gems, such as stored 31502 (P402 MLA), former JPT, Manchester 30831 (MX08 PZH) and newly delivered 30947 (FJ08 VRD) which is for use alongside the older Enviros at Redditch. 30831 is one of 5 MAN/Plaxton Centros at Redditch which are proving somewhat troublesome lately with just 1 in service today.

The P-MLA batch all passed to Diamond with the takeover of the former First depots in Redditch and Kidderminster and many have been withdrawn, however P401 and 403 MLA seem to be hanging on in Kidderminster unlike P402MLA which is now stored at Redditch.
 Having spent most the day on the 57 and 58 services we moved over to the other circulars in Redditch the 55 and 56 which run around Oakenshaw and Walkwood as well as the Alexandra Hospital which is also served by the 143 and 247 services once an hour. Crabbs Cross can provide a nice backdrop of the Malvern Hills as it is one of the highest points in the town as can be seen to the right.

After spending most of the afternoon in Redditch we decided to take a return trip to Birmingham on Johnson's 150/X50 service which offers a rather more popular service than the Diamond 146, MX08 MYR was our bus to Birmingham and back before taking the short 247 home.

The Big Three and a fourth.

For todays trip we decided to do a day on Arriva Midlands services in North and East Midlands. To start with we needed to use the usual 07:08 Stagecoach 26 service from Studley to Redditch. (The service originated in Stratford Upon Avon) This is operated by Stratford Upon Avon garage using tour bus drivers and a 28 branded vehicle, however, on this occasion Leamington's 17059, T659KPU showed up on loan to Stratford Garage.

The 26 service is due to arrive into Redditch at 07:25 however usually arrives before this as the last timing point is Headless Cross and it allows too much time to get between these two points, however 17059 arrived into Redditch at 07:27 just in time to see the London Midland service to departing Redditch train station ... oops. The next move was to buy tickets and wait for the 07:57 service, so we decided to take a 5 minute walk to the Red Diamond depot on Church Lane.

The 07:57 was formed of 323209 which goes forward to Lichfield Trent Valley however we left at Birmingham New Street to get some breakfast and also to use the Arriva service to Tamworth. The Class 323's have been used on the Redditch line since they were brand new and are used on a range of services across Birmingham.
Arriva run 3 main services into Birmingham, the 110, 112 and 116 however also operate some services under there recently acquired Midland operation, after meeting with Adam Priseman and Tom Brant in Birmingham we headed for the 116 stop which is operated using a range of vehicles from there Tamworth depot. 3004 was the bus that showed up for this service and we used this to Tamworth.

While in Tamworth we decided to take some photos of the local bus scenery which includes Scania Omnilinks, Volvo B6LE's, Mercedes Citaros and Volvo B9TL's which are used on a mix of local and express services.

From Tamworth we moved on to Lichfield to do this we used the 785 service which runs from Nuneaton to Lichfield via Tamworth, this is usually home to the Scania Omnilinks for which we were presented with 3810.

We stayed in Lichfield for around half an hour to look at the local bus scene with services run by Midland (Arriva), Blue Diamond, Midland Classic and Arriva.

Midland Classic operate a direct service to Burton as the X12 using a range of Volvo B7RLE vehicles acquired from a dealer after Arriva handed them back after a spell on loan, after buying a Midland Classic Plus day we used the X12 service to Burton which was formed of 81, JB08MCL which was new as MX08NNU to Arriva Yorkshire.

Burton offers a range of operators including Trent Barton, Midland Classic and Arriva on a wide range of services to such locations as Derby and Swadlincote. Midland Classic's 4 service offers the fastest link between Burton and Swadlincote and on this occasion it was formed of an East Lancs bodied MAN and a Dennis Falcon that was acquired from Arriva.

Swadlincote has a small bus network with routes provided by Midland Classic and Arriva with a range of vehicles from Dennis Tridents to Scania Omnicity's.

After catching the Dennis Falcon to Swanlincote we decided to use it back to Burton however upon arrival at the Midland Classic depot we were asked to change bus to one of there recently acquired Optare Solo's number 32, FG52WUC which had arrived from local operator Felix. While in the depot we took a few photos from the Optare Solo while the driver prepared the bus.

From Burton we decided to head towards Derby on the X38 service which runs direct between the two towns as a joint service between Trent Barton and Arriva using a mix of Optare Tempo's and Optare Versa's. We were given Arriva's 2958 on service X38 covering for one of the branded Versa's.

Derby has a very varied bus scene which offers a very wide variety of bus types in a range of liveries from corporate brands to special route brands. Also running on this occasion was a football stadium shuttle using a former Travel West Midlands Metrobus.

After spending some time in Derby photoing the local bus scene we decided it was time to head back to Burton on the X38 service which turned out to be the same bus as earlier 2958.

From Burton we decided to head back to Redditch directly so took a limited amount of photos on the way from Burton we used the Midland Classic X12 once again to get back to Lichfield which was again 81 same as earlier.

After a stop in the pub in Lichfield and Burton we headed for the 765 back to Tamworth which turned out to be Tamworth's 2615 one of the few Volvo B6BLE's remaining at Tamworth garage. V215KDA has been refurbished to a high standard like the other B6's that have been replaced recently by Mercedes Citaro's.

From Tamworth we got a 110 service back to Birmingham which was formed of Scania Omnilink 3809 as the Volvo B9TL's usually don't see use on the evening services to Birmingham. From Birmingham we got 323207 back to Longbridge and then 323213 to Redditch instead of a 30 minute wait in Birmingham. Upon arrival into Redditch we had 67633 back to Washford for the walk to Studley.

London, The Silver Mainline. (29/12/12)

To start todays trip we decided it would be best to pay for a taxi to get into Redditch in time for the first train of the morning. By having a poor understanding of how fast the taxis are we arrived into Redditch with 30 minutes to spare after collecting tickets (oops) so decided to visit the Red Diamond depot where most the fleet were parked before heading out for the days duties.

The 06:27 which was formed of 323208 which we used to Birmingham to allow us to make the Chiltern Mainline service to London after a cushy stop for Breakfast.

From Birmingham the plan was to use the Chiltern Mainline service to London Marylebone from Birmingham Snow Hill, the service comes from Kidderminster starting there at 07:12 and arriving into Snow Hill at 07:51 where it then goes forward stopping at a small handful of stops along the way, allowing Chiltern to offer a service worthy of competing with Virgin and London Midland. The Chiltern service was formed of 82302 and 67015.

From London Marylebone and after meeting Adam Priseman outside we decided to head to London Euston on Stagecoach London's 15117 on the 205 service which runs from Paddington to Bow Church via Marylebone, Euston and Liverpool Street. We stayed here for 20 minutes to photo the variety of buses that serve London Euston station from operators such as First, Arriva, Stagecoach, Go Ahead and Metroline.

The next move was to head to the busy Oxford Street where several buses serve due to it being a busy shopping location with a variety of shops for everyone, to get here we boarded RATP's London United  SP143 on service 10. These Scania OmniDekka's have an unusual seating arrangement downstairs due to having a standing engine.

From Oxford Street we left Adam who decided to go and find some Arriva stuff ... He has a thing for them ... So we decided it was time to grab some bikes and get cycling! I wanted to check out a location in the Victoria area of London where it is good for train photos. From Oxford Street we cycled to Marble Arch, then along Park Lane to Hyde Park Corner. With London being rather busier than elsewhere in the country it is worth taking caution when cycling however with bus lanes on most roads this is a far safer option than the open road and most bus drivers will give you a wide space when passing which is always appreciated! From Hyde Park Corner we cycled down Grosvenor Place and up Buckingham Palace Road to the cycle point by Victoria Coach Station. This ride came in at 2.2miles and 9mph average speed.

Victoria Coach Station is located just a stones throw away from Victoria Train Station which is connected with the Tube station making it a key interchange with a Bus Station also located just outside the Train Station.

From here we cycled to the next point which was located by Ebury Bridge, however we got lost and ended up by The Thames and across the river from the former Battersea Power Station.

We had missed our turn and ended up cycling an extra mile around a rather large block however we found the back of the Rail Depot located just outside London Victoria.

After we found the right location we parked the bikes at the Cycle Dock and proceeded to the location, 10 paces from the cycle dock which was the entrance to the Network Rail site, which provides a great location for train photography outside Victoria Station.

From Ebury Bridge we cycled to Pall Mall's St James's Square, where we decided to walk up to Piccadilly Circus to get some more bus photos.

Piccadilly Circus is a busy hub for buses and tubes being one of the tourist hot spots being a key location near Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace, having finished photoing at Piccadilly we decided to use some Tubes to get to Liverpool Street Station.
We used to tube from Embankment to Waterloo then Waterloo to Bank and Bank to Liverpool Street where we headed for a 205 bus to Angel which turned out to be 15101 another Scania OmniDekka!
From Angel we cycled to Oxford Street, down to Victoria and then through Buckingham Gardens and to Marylebone.
From here we ended up on 168217 back to Birmingham Moor Street on the 18:06 service.

From Birmingham we got 323217 back to Redditch on the 20:13 service which was running slightly late so by the time we got back to Redditch we ended up missing the 58 and waiting half an hour for it to get back to do a 57 (These being circular routes following the same route)

From Redditch we caught 67640, VX54 MRU on the 57 service to Washford, Redditch where we then had to walk back to Studley due to no buses running to Studley after 7.15pm, Welcome to Redditch!
